The Pickens Report talked about the need for a support group for parents administrated through the district office. In discussions with me, the district wanted to know the best way to gather information from the public on just what was needed in a support group. So, I am adding this subject to the discussion to help gather that information.
Just what do you think should be the make up of the support group?
I've already said there needs to be informational seminars from advocates, parent educators and district/state/federal sources on educational subject. These subjects include what exactly is a 504 and IEP plan, what is a BIP and what do parents have to do to see if their child needs a plan.
What about you? What do you think needs to be included. What subjects do you need info on? What type of direct support from a group do you need?

I have been contemplating starting a parent support group myself. However, if the district is going to do this, I don't want to recreate the wheel. As far as information needed to be addressed: 1. How to navigate the evaluation process. What to do when the district refuses to evaluate. 2. How to write a proper IEP with measurable goals. 3. IEP vs. 504 4. What to do when you are stonewalled by the district. 5. Coping after child's diagnosis. 6. Workshops on different disabilities; i.e. Autism, ADHD, Specific Learning Disabilities, etc. 7. What is RTI? Is it working 8. Bullying. 9. How to write accomodations on 504 plan specific to your child and not just the canned accomodations they give everyone. 10. IDEA 2004; changes and what does it mean for the education of our children. 11. How many do you want? I mentioned in my other post that I was concerned about getting the correct information if this is sponsored by the district. I still am. A lot of parents and children have been hurt by this district. There is little trust. It is hurtful when you find that the school that is supposed to be helping your child is intentionally keeping services away from them.

I was in a meeting where a REAL behavior plan with REAL solutions was unvailed by the new district folks. The child would get worn slap out before being able to fail. It was impressive!
The new folks know that trust is earned and there is quite a past balance to pay in this district. They are focusing on cleaning up the mess and getting the right things in place for children. They have concluded that only doing the job right will earn real trust around here.
Unfortunately, one board member is calling this sort of thing bueaucracy and the 'my way or the highway' approach. I call it doing education right. Do show up at the next PCSD board meeting (if you don't already) and tell a Guest Editorialist by the name of Board Member Alex Saitta that you as a parent have gotten the 'schools way or the highway' for too many years and you are glad there are so many changes. We need to support these changes.
This is why I set up this thread. Here, people can give input (as much as you can because we want to cover all the bases) without fear of the retaliation faced in the past. This area is for real feedback to get to the right people.
