In the Pickens Report, it stated the District needs to start a parent support group. Have they done this yet or are they in the process of doing this? How will people know about this support group? How unbiased do you think a support group would be if sponsored by the district?

To be honest, I'm not sure how far along they are on this. I do know there have been major improvements since October 1st. I do know they have been looking into just how they are going to do this and have told me it is on the short list.
As for being unbiased...I have had the chance to get to know the new special ed folks abit and I think they are biased against the way things had been done! There is SO much to fix in our special ed and they are working on the most needy right now. I have been nothing short of impressed by the changes.
I have spoken with the new special ed person at the district office on more than one occasion and she is just asking people be patient with the new folks. I let her know...that we know our district didn't get in this shape overnight and it isn't going to get fixed overnight.
What I would suggest is if you are interested in the support group that you contact the district office and tell them you would like to work with them to help start the group. They are interested in public involvement (now that's a switch!). Parents helping parents is what they are looking for. The district involvement is to facilitate and educate. After all, the number one reason why children have not gotten what they need in the past is because the parents simply didn't know what was (or should be) available and how to ask for it.
I'll send you a message as to how to contact and welcome to the board!

To be honest with you, I am still a little leary of calling them. Last time I talked with them, I got nowhere and was talked to in a very demeaning way. I understand there have been changes, I'm just a little cautious.

I don't blame you! How long ago was it that you spoke with the district office?
IM me and tell me who it was you spoke with. There are now ways to correct that type of behavior. One of the new people got a kick out of me saying some of the teachers and such needed Behavioral Intervention Plans!
I have seen first hand problem staff being addressed and situations improve. It was quite refreshing to be honest. ;D
